The Forty Seven Ronin · The True Story of Japan's Great Act of Loyalty
3 hours · Kingdoms at Dusk · July 24, 2026
The true story of the forty seven ronin, the most famous act of loyalty in Japanese history, told slowly and gently so you can fall asleep inside it. When their lord was ordered to die and their world was taken, forty seven masterless samurai waited almost two years, their leader pretending to fall apart to disarm suspicion, then kept their promise on one snowy night and gave themselves up. Their graves are still tended today, three hundred years on. We give you the ending in the first minutes, and it is told with quiet and grave gentleness, never with fear.
This is a Tale episode, our Friday tradition: one true story from history, told at the fireside. It is a story about patience, about keeping faith when everything that mattered is gone, and about how a quiet promise, kept, can outlive the men who kept it by three hundred years.
This is roughly a one hour story inside a three hour video. The tale ends softly around the 52 minute mark, and then the quiet night carries on until morning. Black screen friendly.
New episodes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6pm Eastern. Nights carry you inside an ordinary evening from the past. Tales, every Friday, tell one true story from history, calm enough to sleep to and interesting enough to stay up for.
Sources: the documented Ako incident of 1701 to 1703; and modern historians of Tokugawa Japan, distinguished carefully from the later Chushingura theater.

Welcome
Hi, I'm David. Welcome to a Tale. Once a week on this channel we tell a true story from history, the kind I stay up too late reading about, told slow enough to fall asleep to. Tonight it is the story of the forty seven ronin of Japan, forty seven masterless samurai who kept one promise across almost two years, through a great deal of patience and one quiet snowy night. Everything you will hear really happened, and the sources are listed below.
There are no ads waiting to wake you, and I will tell you right now that this story ends in peace, with all forty seven of them at rest beside their lord, honored ever since. So settle in, get warm, and let an old story keep you company. Goodnight.
